Choose things that grow who you are as a person, not just as a student.
The First Generation community at ANU has continued to grow and evolve throughout 2025. We recently came together as the Student Equity team from Inclusive and Respectful Communities hosted a Celebration event for students, staff and alumni.;Our theme for the event was “Passing It On”, reflecting on the values and skills passed onto us, and the advice and support we may be able to pass onto those who come after us.
On Thursday 9th October, members of the First Generation community gathered in The Gallery of the Lowitja O’Donoghue Cultural Centre in Kambri. Attendees were joined by Professor Samantha Bennett, as well as two student speakers: Alice Burns and Edi Licciardi. Each shared some lessons learned from their experiences as First Generation students, both at ANU and abroad.
Professor Samantha Bennett is the Associate Dean of Higher Degree Research at the ANU, and a lecturer at the School of Music. Her experiences as a working-class student shaped the lens through which she views the world and the values that underpin her success in the higher education sector. Her address was highly affirming and impactful to those in attendance, and her passion to transform the First Generation experience at ANU was highly appreciated by the students present.
First Generation students Edi Licciardi and Alice Burns shared encouraging advice which could apply to all of us: rather than doing what is expected of you, follow your passions and embrace your abilities. Both speakers animatedly shared recounts of their first year at ANU, noting how intimidated they first felt but how confident they have become as they embrace their identities at ANU.
For Alice, her main message was - “Choose things that grow who you are as a person, not just as a student.” For Edi, her key takeaway was - “Put your gifts to use!”
After hearing from our speakers, attendees were able to offer their own reflections, by asking questions and engaging in constructive conversations about their experiences. Many passed on inspiring messages for future students, including:
“Stay true to yourself. You belong here.”
“There is never only one path. It may not be linear; it may not always be forward, but if you know what you want, you will find a way.”
Attendees also provided advice to graduates who face entering the workforce:
“Your journey does not end here. Embrace this joyous achievement, enjoy the moment, and smile because more experiences are on the horizon!”
“You’ve achieved so much! Take a moment to reflect on what really matters to you and what you want to pursue next.”
Thank you to everyone who attended this year’s celebration event, or any of the other events hosted this year!
