The University may make alternate provisions for undergraduate and graduate coursework students who are unable to attend a formal examination at the prescribed owing to extenuating circumstances.
A deferred examination is an official opportunity to sit an exam later when serious or unavoidable circumstances prevent you from attending at the scheduled time.
Deferred examinations are considered through the Extenuating Circumstances Application (ECA) process. A deferred exam is only one possible outcome of an ECA, which may also result in:
- An alternative assessment
- A modified weighting of assessments
- A due date extension
You should apply for a deferred exam if unexpected and unavoidable events, such as illness, injury, or other serious events, prevent you from attending your scheduled exam. Wherever possible, a student should sit their examination at the prescribed time, and if necessary, go the ECA website and click apply.
A preference not to use Proctorio will not normally be considered grounds to defer an examination.
Please note there have been recent changes to ECA policies and procedures.
Applying for a Deferred Examination
Step 1 – Check if you are eligible
You may be eligible to apply for a deferred exam if:
- You experienced sudden, unavoidable circumstances beyond your control (e.g. illness, accident, family death), and
- Those circumstances directly prevented you from sitting the exam.
You cannot apply for both an assessment adjustment and a deferred examination for the same task. You are normally allowed only one ECA per assessment item, with a final additional ECA permitted if new circumstances arise in connection with a deferred exam.
No further ECAs are permitted beyond this.
Step 2 – Prepare your supporting documentation
Applications must be supported by independent, verifiable documentation that demonstrates:
- The date when the circumstances began or changed, and
- How they affected your ability to attend or complete the exam, and
- If possible, a recommended ‘fit to study’ date
Acceptable evidence may include:
- Medical certificates from a registered health professional
- Official letters from employers, counsellors, or other relevant authorities
Please note: photographs, videos, or unverified content are not considered valid evidence.
Requirements for independent supporting evidence
- You must not submit photographs, audio files or videos with content that may be considered distressing or graphic. In addition, for any application where you are required to provide supporting evidence, photographs, audio files or videos are generally not considered appropriate evidence as their authenticity cannot be verified.
- You are not required to provide certified copies of documents during the initial application process. However, the University reserves the right to require applicants to provide original documentation subsequently. Any document submitted may be audited and is subject to verification from the issuing body.
- Documentation must be in English or an official translation must be provided. You should submit copies of the original documentation and the English translation of these documents.

Step 5 – Scheduling of Deferred Examinations - Semester 2, 2025
If your Deferred Examination is approved via the Extenuating Circumstances Application (ECA) process, the scheduling of your deferred exam will depend on the nature and timing of your circumstances. The University has introduced two distinct deferred exam periods to accommodate both short-term and longer-term impacts.
Deferred examination periods for Semester 2, 2025:
Situation | Deferred Exam Timing |
---|---|
Short-term, unforeseeable circumstances | Monday 17 November – Saturday 29 November 2025 |
Longer-term impacts (e.g. ongoing health conditions, extended disruptions) | Monday 16 February – Friday 20 February 2026 (O-Week prior to Semester 1, 2026) |
- Important note: Deferred exams will not be held during Week 1 of Semester 1, 2026
FAQ's about deferred examinations
What can I do if my deferred examination application is lodged later than five days after the scheduled examination?
An application form must be completed and lodged within five business days of the original examination date. Applications will not be accepted after five business days unless serious illness or misadventure prevented you from submitting the form within this period.
How will I be notified about the outcome of my deferred examination application?
Students will be notified of the outcome of the application via their student email account. The Examinations Office will contact students via their student email account if an application is incomplete, so it is important to check your email account regularly.
Will I receive an outcome before my scheduled examination?
Outcomes for deferred examination applications may not be resolved before the scheduled examination.
Can I have multiple attempts at an examination?
No. Wherever possible, students should sit their examination as scheduled and apply for an extenuating circumstances adjustment. Where sitting the examination as scheduled is not possible due to severe illness, or unforeseen or unavoidable circumstances, seeking to defer the examination is the appropriate action.
When will my deferred examination be scheduled?
Students will be advised of the details of their deferred examination by the relevant ANU College/School or the Examinations Office. The timing of the examination is set at the discretion of the ANU College/School.
