The Australian 精东传媒app University (ANU) has officially reopened its historic University House as part of celebrations marking the University鈥檚 80th anniversary and launched ANU by 2030, its strategy for the next chapter of its national mission.
ACT Chief Minister and ANU alumnus, Andrew Barr MLA, officially opened the restored University House at a ceremony on Friday, more than six years after the heritage-listed building was severely damaged in the January 2020 Canberra hailstorm.
The University House Key was presented by Master of University House Professor Peter Kanowski to Chief Minister Barr, who then presented it to ANU Interim Vice-Chancellor Professor Rebekah Brown on behalf of the ANU community.
University House was opened in 1954 by Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, and has long served as the ceremonial and social heart of ANU for staff, students, visiting scholars and the broader community.
Professor Brown said the reopening was a significant moment for the University as it celebrated its 80-year history while looking towards it future.
鈥淯niversity House is a place of deep significance in the University鈥檚 story,鈥 Professor Brown said.
鈥淭he restoration honours that history while ensuring it continues to serve future generations.鈥
Professor Kanowski said University House was ready to resume its place in the life of ANU and the broader Canberra community.
鈥淯niversity House has been restored not only as a heritage landmark, but as a living part of the ANU community once again,鈥 Professor Kanowski said.
The ceremony also honoured the University鈥檚 eight decades of contribution to Australia and the world, while looking ahead to the next chapter of the University鈥檚 history through the launch of its new strategy ANU by 2030.
ANU by 2030 is the University鈥檚 new strategy setting out its future direction and reaffirming its role as Australia鈥檚 national university.
Professor Brown said the strategy had been shaped through an extensive co-design process with more than 1,000 staff, students and alumni contributing their ideas, insights and aspirations.

The strategy sets out three areas of impact: discovering knowledge of consequence and building sovereign capability through research; delivering a world-class, research-led education that develops future leaders; and convening expertise, ideas and perspectives to address Australia鈥檚 most important challenges.
The reopening of University House and the launch of ANU by 2030 form part of the University鈥檚 80th anniversary program, celebrating the University鈥檚 past while setting its direction for the future.
