ISSC has met every three weeks since its inception in February 2026, focused on advancing key strategic priorities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff and students at the Australian Nataional University (ANU) and strengthening the governance and institutional settings supporting this work. The ANU First Nations Portfolio (FNP) provides secretarial support for ISSC, which is Co-Chaired by Professor Peter Yu, Vice-President (First Nations).
ISSC engaged closely with the development of the ANU by 2030 Strategy, including direct consultation on Indigenous matters included within the Strategy, working with with the Director, Strategy, Ant Bagshaw.
In May 2026, ISSC submitted a paper to the University Executive Committee (UEC) proposing the creation of a Pro Vice Chancellor (Indigenous) role. UEC supported the proposal in principle.
ISSC also considered the status of the University鈥檚 Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), which expired in January 2026, and recommended that the new Strategy and its commitment to Indigenous matters at ANU act in place of a renewed RAP. ISSC also made recommendations on terminology relating to Indigenous peoples across ANU strategy and communications. 鈥淎boriginal and Torres Strait Islander鈥 was suggested as the clearest and most inclusive term.
ISSC is now focused on working to translate the ANU Strategy into action by engaging with the creation of the Implementation Plan.
Throughout 2026, ISSC has continued to consider broader strategic matters affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples at ANU, including Indigenous research, employment, and institutional governance.
ISSC has sought to ensure these matters are considered at the appropriate level of University governance and are supported by clear accountability and resourcing.
