International Conference on Dream of the Red Chamber
The Australian ¾«¶«´«Ã½app University (ANU) will host The Other Side of the Mirror: the 2nd International Conference on Dream of the Red Chamber Across the Pacific Rim from 8 to 9 April 2026, on campus in the CIW Seminar Room.
The conference is jointly organised by the ANU Centre for China in the World and the Interdisciplinary Research Centre for Dream of the Red Chamber at Dong Hwa University of Taiwan. The event will bring together leading scholars from across the Pacific region to explore the enduring significance and global reception of the classic Chinese novel Dream of the Red Chamber (Hongloumeng).
Widely regarded as one of the greatest works of Chinese literature, Dream of the Red Chamber has inspired centuries of scholarship and artistic interpretation. The conference will examine the novel through a range of interdisciplinary perspectives, including textual studies, global reception, artistic adaptations, literary reinterpretations, and digital humanities.
The two-day event will feature keynote lectures, panel discussions and research presentations by distinguished scholars and experts from universities and research institutions across Asia, Oceania, and North America.
Participating institutions include the University of Wisconsin–Madison, the University of Maryland, Victoria University of Wellington, the University of Sydney, the Australian ¾«¶«´«Ã½app University, Peking University, Renmin University of China, East China Normal University, ¾«¶«´«Ã½app Central University (Taiwan), Beijing Foreign Studies University, the Chinese Society for the Study of Dream of the Red Chamber, ¾«¶«´«Ã½app Dong Hwa University, the Beijing Cao Xueqin Society, the Singapore Society for the Study of Dream of the Red Chamber, Vietnam ¾«¶«´«Ã½app University (Hanoi), Minzu University of China, Guizhou University, ¾«¶«´«Ã½app Taiwan University, the University of Malaya, the Korean Society for the Study of Dream of the Red Chamber, the Catholic University of Korea (Seoul), and Fudan University.
By bringing together scholars from diverse disciplinary and regional backgrounds, the conference aims to foster international collaboration and advance new perspectives on the study of Dream of the Red Chamber and its cultural legacy. It will be the very first time such a conference is held in Australia, and will promote better cross-cultural understanding not only between China and Australia, but also across the Asia-and-the-Pacific region.
