Presented by ANU College of Asia & the Pacific
A student-led symposium
In 2000, the Security Council adopted Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security (WPS). This landmark resolution was a result of sustained activism by women from all over the world, and it reinforced other global gender equality agendas such as the Convention on the Elimination of Violence Against Women, International Population and Development (ICPD) Programme of Action, and the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. Resolution 1325 is part of 10 existing UN Security Council resolutions which cement a global commitment to promoting women’s participation in all forms of security decision-making, and the valuing of gender perspectives in conflict prevention, protection from violence, and relief and recovery responses. Various countries and regional organisations have committed to implementing the agenda and localising reforms. A vibrant field of WPS research and practice has grown over the years including dedicated trainings, conferences and programmes globally.
Yet, the urgent need for accelerating progress on WPS goals is evident in the many conflicts and crises shaping contemporary national and international order. Why do we continue to see pervasive barriers to women’s political participation in diplomatic and foreign affairs? What are the gendered drivers to the multiple global conflicts and crises we bear witness to? How can gender equality serve as both outcome and pre-condition for sustainable peace?
Please join us in marking 25 years of the global Women, Peace and Security agenda to collectively reflect on these questions and more in our student-led Symposium. You will hear from keynote speakers and student presentations exploring the themes of power, resistance and emerging challenges. These seminars will also provide opportunities to connect and be involved in making WPS goals a reality.
Come be part of the celebrations (booking or registration not required)!
