Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation)

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation) is responsible for the development and implementation of strategies, policies and systems to achieve the University's strategic goals in research and innovation.

The portfolio's key roles are to:

  • Provide leadership and oversight of the University's research strategies to deliver high quality research outcomes and impact
  • Provide leadership and oversight of the University's strategies in commercialisation, intellectual property, industry and business engagement
  • Establish and foster strategic partnerships with Australian and international agencies, alliances and external partners that will enhance the University's strategic goals
  • Work collaboratively with College Heads to ensure that ANU attracts and retains outstanding researchers and provides research facilities and infrastructure within an innovative research environment
  • Ensure that Higher Degree by Research students receive research training programs of the highest quality and deliver high levels of student satisfaction.
  • Provide a framework that maintains the highest ethical standards and integrity for the conduct of research.
  • Provide leadership and oversight of academic promotions, including policy leadership that supports high quality promotion outcomes.

Professor Stuart Wyithe currently holds this role. 

Professor Wyithe has most recently held the position of Director of the ANU Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics and brings extensive leadership experience spanning research excellence, institutional strategy and national collaboration. He is an experienced academic leader whose work has shaped major national research initiatives and strengthened Australia's international research standing and he brings a deep understanding of the opportunities and challenges facing the research sector and will play a critical role in advancing the University's research and innovation agenda in a rapidly evolving global environment.

Professor Wyithe joined ANU in 2023 from the University of Melbourne, where he built a distinguished 20-year career as a researcher and academic leader. During his time at Melbourne, he served as Redmond Barry Distinguished Professor and held several senior leadership appointments including Associate Dean (Research), Associate Dean (Graduate Research) and Head of the School of Physics.

He also served as Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence for All Sky Astrophysics in 3 Dimensions (ASTRO-3D), helping to strengthen Australia's leadership in astronomy and astrophysics research through large-scale national collaboration.

An internationally recognised astrophysicist, Professor Wyithe's research focuses on the formation and evolution of galaxies and supermassive black holes. His contributions to the field have been recognised through numerous honours, including the Pawsey Medal and the Malcolm McIntosh Prize for Physical Scientist of the Year.

Professor Wyithe has also made significant contributions to the broader research community through leadership roles including President of the Astronomical Society of Australia and Chair of the 精东传媒app Committee for Astronomy.
